UNICEF South Africa -A Credible Voice Amid COVID-19
National lockdowns and social distancing practices have turned the world inward — making us obsessed with the constant streaming of news. The proliferation of information around the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a what has been termed an “infodemic”. In an environment where fake news is at a high and fact-checking is at a low, panic prevails! That is why UNICEF South Africa is committed to working with health experts to promote facts over fear.
A fact-finding mission
Misinformation is spreading as fast as the virus, fuelling discrimination, social stigma and a sense of fear and helplessness. It is vital for any humanitarian or charity organization to do their fact-checking to ensure that any information shared, relating to campaign initiatives and programmes, is credible, consistent and legitimate.
Partnering with frontline responders as a voice for children in vulnerable and under-resourced communities is UNICEF South Africa’s #1 priority. Our COVID-19 online platform serves as a credible source for the protection of children and families by providing reliable media resources, helpful tips and guidance, and the latest updates.
The National Health Department and WHO are further trustworthy sources of breaking news, data and statistics when it comes to the spread of the virus.
A timely opportunity
As the coronavirus takes the spotlight, UNICEF South Africa is uniquely positioned to step in the gap and help children in informal settlements across our country.
UNICEF South Africa’s #LittleHandsMatter Campaign has set a goal to urgently raise R200 000 to build 10 handwashing stations in under-resourced communities in various parts of South Africa to stop the spread of disease, promoting healthy hygiene in a sustainable way and making a long-term impact in these communities.
As a humanitarian organisation, UNICEF South Africa aims to have a significant impact on the lives of children in high-density areas where there is a high risk of the spread of the virus.
